  AIR VICE MARSHAL JO OSHONIYI
BIRTH/CAREER PROGRESSION

Air Vice Marshal John Olusola Oshoniyi was born on 19 November 1957 at Fiditi, Oyo State. He attended the Nigerian Military School, Zaria between 1972 and 1976 and enlisted into the Nigerian Air Force through the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of 21 Regular Course. Air Vice Marshal Oshoniyi was commissioned to the rank of Pilot Officer on 03 Jul 79 and promoted to the present rank of Air Vice Marshal on 03 Jan 08.
COURSES ATTENDED AND QUALIFICATIONS

The Air Officer attended several courses since he joined the Nigerian Air Force. He was trained at the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell,UK for his basic aircraft engineering course(Electrical & Instrument) between 1978 and 1979. In 1981, he was type-rated on the Alpha Jet aircraft at the factory’s facilities in Germany and France. He also had working experience on the L29 and Mig 21 aircraft types in Kano between 1979 and 1981.

For his command and staff training, Air Vice Marshal Oshoniyi attended both the Junior and Senior staff courses at Armed Forces Command and Staff College,Jaji. He then attended Benue State University where he bagged his Advance Diploma in Personnel Management and Master degree in Public Administration. The Air Officer is also a graduate of Nigerian Defence College, Abuja and University of Ibadan where he graduated with MSc degree in Strategic Studies.

APPOINTMENTS HELD

Air Vice Marshal Oshoniyi has held many appointments and served at various Nigerian Air Force units. These include; Commanding Officer 13 Logistics Wing, 88 MAG Ikeja between July 94 and February 95, Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji between February 95 and September 98. Thereafter, he was appointed as the Commander 33 Logistics Group Makurdi from July 99 to July 01.

The Air Officer also held appointments at Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Abuja. These include; Deputy Director Computers (DOPLANS) from July 01 to July 03 and Deputy Director Air Engineering between July 03 and September 04. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Command Logistics Officer at Headquarters Tactical Command between August 05 and February 06. He was also a Directing Staff at the Nigerian Defence College, Abuja. The Air Officer was appointed as the Commander 435 BSG from August 06 to July 07 and later posted to 401 ACMD as Commander between July 07 and December 07.

After his tenure as the Commander 401 ACMD, he assumed duty as the Director Air Engineering and subsequently the Director of Production at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja until his recent appointment as the Air Officer in Charge Logistics (AOL)

MILITARY/ACADEMIC AWARDS

Air Vice Marshal Oshoniyi won several military and academic awards, some of which include the Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of Air Staff Award both at the National Defence College in 2005. He also won the Best NAF Graduating Student, MSc Strategic Studies Class (University of Ibadan) 2005/2006 Session.

MEDALS & DECORATIONS

The Air Officer’s decorations include the Forces Service Star(FSS) Medal, Meritorious Service Star(MSS) Medal and the Distinguish Service Star(DSS) Medal. His other decorations are Passed Staff College Dagger (psc(+)) and the Fellow War College Dagger (fwc(+)).

MARITAL STATUS/HOBBIES

Air Vice Marshal Oshoniyi is married and blessed with children. His hobbies include photography, sight-seeing, listening to country and gospel music. Others are, playing Table Tennis, Volley Ball and armateur golfing.

OTHER INFORMATION

The Air Officer recorded some outstanding achievement while serving outside the shores of his country. Notable amongst them was that he led the advance party of the Nigerian Air Force combat element (Alpha Jet Detachment) to Sierra Leone in 1990. He also established the location where the Nigerian Air Force contingent to Sierra-Leone occupied throughout the duration of the ECOMOG Operation.
